Cyberbullying Example - Two Charged!

Rehtaeh Parson of Halifax, Nova Scotia died in April 2013 at age 17. when life support was stopped  as a result of a suicide attempt in November 2011.  She endured months of sustained harassment and cyberbullying that ultimately, resulted in her death.

Initially, no charges were laid as police were unable to acquire sufficient evidence. The case was reopened later after public outcry and a web campaign that uncovered new evidence supporting the alleged case. This resulted in  two youths being charged with making and distributing child pornography after photos of an alleged sexual assault on  Rehtaeh were circulated to her schoolmates via cell phone and social media websites. Unfortunately, sexual assault charges could not be laid as the evidence did not meet the criteria.
